WORK to repair a burst water pipe on Great Western Way may have been completed but delays could continue until Thursday morning.

Thames Water is resurfacing the road after the burst pipe buckled a 100ft stretch of the carriageway about six inches deep.

The pipe burst last week for the second time in seven months.

Contractors were waiting for a special 'foam' concrete, which Swindon Council asked to be used, and there was a delay while the material was ordered.

Work to lay the concrete is now due to get underway today or tomorrow. Two layers will have to be laid and then it will have to be left to set for 24 hours.

Thames Water's Andrew Boyd said the road would reopen fully on Wednesday evening at the earliest and may not be completely clear until Thursday morning. "We are sorry that this will disrupt so many people for so long," he said.

The northbound carriageway from Mannington roundabout to the Meads roundabout is still closed. Police have urged motorists to avoid the area due to delays while the work is carried out.

Last June the busy route had to be closed for more than three hours after parts of the road were submerged in two feet of water causing traffic disruption.
