FIRST-TIME homebuyers are being offered a lifeline in Shrewton.

Salisbury district council has teamed up with Sarsen housing association to sell five shared-ownership homes in the village's newest development, The Limes.

One- and two-bedroom properties are available, with applicants able to purchase a house in stages to suit them, choosing to buy from a minimum 50 per cent share to a maximum 80 per cent share.

The council's portfolio holder for housing, Councillor John Cole-Morgan, said: "In south Wiltshire, many of our residents, especially first-time buyers, are finding it increasingly difficult to buy a house or flat.

"This is because we have higher-than-average property prices but lower-than-average salaries.

"It is particularly difficult in the more rural parts of our district, where there are fewer opportunities for newer developments.

"Shared ownership schemes are a way of helping people to get that all-important foot on the property ladder."

Applicants will need to have sufficient finances (a single person must earn at least £15,000 per annum and a couple £20,000) to secure a mortgage for at least 50 per cent of the property value and the ability to pay a low rent to Sarsen housing association.

Priority will be given to applicants who have family or work connections with the Shrewton area, followed by people who have family and work connections with other parts of the Salisbury district.

Anyone who would like to apply for one of the properties should contact Ann Badcock or Helen Taylor at the district council as soon as possible, on 01722 434463.

All applications must be in by February 28.
