OBJECTORS to plans for a mobile phone mast are calling for a public meeting after claiming that the parish council is not representing their views.
Plans for the O2 transmitter on the parish council-owned recreation ground in Pewsey have been turned down by Kennet District Council.
But the objectors believe that the mobile phone company is to appeal against the decision.
At a stormy meeting of Pewsey Parish Council objector Beth Haslam, who lives in Ball Road close to the proposed mast, said that the issue was causing a rift between Pewsey Vale FC and the tennis club.
The soccer club stood to gain from the rent O2 would be paying but the parents of young tennis club members were concerned about possible health risks from the transmitter.
She said that a public meeting was needed so that people could express their views.
But chairman Alex Carder refuted suggestions that the council had created a "them and us" situation.
Coun Carder said that the council had previously had open meetings at which people could voice their opinions. If members of the public wanted to call a meeting, that was up to them but the parish council has already discussed the plans at length and made its decision, he said.
He described the objectors, about 12 of whom were at the meeting, as a small minority in the village of about 4,000 .
Parish council planning chairman Peter Deck said the council would be asked to give evidence to any planning inquiry. He would be happy to attend a public meeting to hear any new evidence or information.
Phyllis Mason, one of the leading objectors, said some people were still unaware of the mast proposal.
