A DOUBLE from Jonathan Scott double sent Devizes through to the quarter finals of the Wiltshire Senior Cup on Saturday.
Town's victory over the Hellenic League outfit ended a barren spell of five defeats on the trot.
Assistant manager John Freegard said the win was needed ahead of their important Screwfix Premier match at table-topping Bideford on Saturday.
He said: "It was important to get a win as confidence is fragile at the moment. It was not a great performance but we would have taken any victory."
The assistant was pleased with the dedication of his players as they refused to back out of fierce aerial challenges. Three of them finished the game looking like they had come out of a street fight.
Nathan Perkins received a black eye, Andy Coombes broke his nose and Dave Lloyd split his lip. Despite their injuries the players should all be fit for the match against Bideford.
"It was great to keep a clean sheet and get to the quarter finals. This is a cup we entered to win," added Freegard.
The first half was a stalemate with both sides failing to create any clear-cut chances. Striker Dave Macey came closest midway through the half but his fierce shot from outside the box flew inches wide.
On the stroke of half time Scott made his presence felt when he popped up to break the deadlock.
Simon Price's pass was deflected into the path of the striker's run and he elegantly chipped visiting keeper Ian Gill.
The Hellenic Premier League strugglers put up a fight in the second period, and both sides had opportunities to score.
Bassett came closest to netting and levelling the scores on 55 minutes.
Wiltshire U18 striker Matty Bennett picked up the loose ball on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a venomous shot.
He held his head in his hands in disappointment as the ball smashed against the crossbar and was cleared to safety.
Minutes later it was the home side's turn to hit the woodwork when Nathan Perkins' curling free kick smacked off the post.
Captain Brad Newman covered every blade of grass as he battled to win possession. In the dying minutes a lack of communication led to Devizes' second.
The Bassett defence left the ball for the keeper but Gill slipped and missed it allowing Scott to rush in and poke home.
"They had a couple of good strikers who did well for them but we could have had one or two more." Freegard added.
