CORSHAM continued their fine form after ousting a resiliant Pewsey side to reach the quarter finals of the Senior Cup.

Vale were left cursing their luck as they missed a penalty, and had two men sent off late in the game.

Pewsey manager Steve Wootton said his side were unlucky to be a goal down at half-time after Tom Richie missed the first half penalty.

He said: "I was impressed with my players, I thought we deserved something out of the game.

"Tom was unfortunate to miss the penalty. He missed one last week in a Sunday league game and I think that knocked his confidence."

He added: "The two centre backs (Chris Oram and Martin Churchward) were superb and did not lose a single ball in the air.

"At half-time a Corsham supporter praised our performance, which is pleasing to hear."

In the final stages, the visitors had Steve Bush (two yellow cards) and Carl Marsh (foul language) sent off but the score was already 2-0.

Corsham manager Colin Bush was impressed with the Hellenic Premier League strugglers but believed his side deserved the victory.

He said: "They have certainly improved since the beginning of the season and gave us a good physical challenge.

"When they went down to nine men they passed the ball around extremely well."

The home side fielded an unusual 11 as midfielders Scott Lye and Jamie Lyons were at Lilleshall training with the England U18 side.

Frank Coleman was rested and John Woods had 'flu. Pewsey top scorer Craig Wall was suspended.

Corsham were denied an early lead when keeper Danny Holcroft stretched to make a fine save from a Dave Hopkins free kick.

A minute later the opposite keeper was called upon when a long ball from defender Richard Pearson found striker Andy Youngsam. But keeper Craig Chaplin managed to turn the shot around the post.

The penalty was awarded on 14 minutes when Youngsam made a forward run and was brought down just inside the box. Richie stepped up but goalkeeper Chaplin guessed the right way and saved to his left.

This proved costly for Vale when two minutes later Alan Webb netted for Corsham. Visiting keeper Holcroft was unable to get to a low cross from Tony Colbourne and the winger slammed the ball in from close range.

Pewsey fought hard for the rest of the half and managed to keep the Screwfix Premier high flyers at bay.

Corsham sealed the win in the 67th minute when youngster John Eldred was put through on the keeper. His shot was saved by Holcroft but Eldred netted the rebound.

Bush is now looking forward to the next league match at home against Barnstaple on Saturday.

He expects most of his side back apart form defender Dave Hopkins, who twisted his ankle at the end of Saturday's match.

Pewsey were supposed to be playing Didcot Town in the Hellenic League on Saturday, but Didcot are in the FA Vase and have cancelled the fixture.

At short notice Pewsey have arranged a friendly at home to Wessex League side Downton (3pm).

Entrance will be free but spectators will be asked to make a small donation to raise money for the Tsunami appeal.
