15164/1ANCIENT bones discovered at the Black Swan Hotel in Devizes have caused a stir. The small fragments of bones were unearthed when programme makers filmed a vigil in the cellar of the hotel.

Following a call by a concerned viewer who saw the Sky One programme, Britain's Most Haunted, Devizes police were contacted.

Wiltshire Coroner David Masters was informed but it was confirmed this week that the bones were more than 200 years old and therefore outside his jurisdiction.

The Black Swan's cellar is reputed to be haunted by a former owner who was a respectable person by day but a highwayman by night. Numerous people who have attended night vigils in the cellar have also reported the spirit of a boy aged between five and nine.

Pam Lugg, co-owner of the Black Swan, said the programme makers thought the bones could be those of a child, so she and her husband, Colin, took the bones to the Wiltshire Heritage Museum.

Katie Hinds, finds liaison officer at the museum in Long Street, said she and her colleagues believe the bones were those of an animal, possibly a sheep.
