Painswick came from behind after the interval to win this cup contest by a narrow three-point margin in appallingly muddy conditions.

Missing several first team regulars, Minety took a while to gel and the visitors took advantage.

From their own line-out deep in Minety's quarter they exerted pressure and gained a penalty some seven metres from the line, spreading the ball wide to score.

Minety regrouped after this setback and their efforts were rewarded with a rolling maul try from a line-out win after 20 minutes, hooker Andy Moran claiming the touchdown.

A quarter of an hour later, the home team capped another period of extended pressure with a lovely wheel-and-steal manoeuvre at a five metre scrum.

Driven back on their put in, Painswick lost control of the ball in their second row, only to see Minety flanker Mark Holdsworth grab it when it squirted out and dive over.

The visitors were in further difficulties following a late charge up the slope by the Minety threequarters.

A final chip ahead should have been fielded by the Painswick defence, but when they failed to control the slippery ball, a quick witted Roberts was on hand to scoop it up and carry it over the line.

Playing down the hill after the break, Minety could have expected to extend their lead, but Painswick looked the sharper side and played the better-organised rugby.

Taking a leaf from their host's book, they too adopted the short game to good effect, and ran in three unanswered tries to advance to the next round.

Next week, Minety resume league duties. The firsts travel away to take on Tadley, while the seconds head south to play Warminster.
