16438/2FIREFIGHTERS have kitted out an estate in Warminster with smoke detectors. More than 30 homes in Flers Court were without detectors before the fire brigade stepped in.

Leading firefighter Pete Holcombe, who spent all day fitting the systems, said: "We are constantly going round fitting smoke alarms but it's very rare that we fit that many.

"We have done the whole estate and fitted about 30 of the bungalows as most of them were unprotected."

Crews checked for signs of faulty wiring, which is often a cause of fires, before giving general tips on safety.

Station officer Chris Trimby said: "They are smoke alarms which don't need to be checked for 10 years."

The benefit is that the batteries don't quickly run flat.
