PEOPLE in Trowbridge have backed plans for the town council to take over the former magistrates' court despite the fact it could mean higher council tax bills.

Residents will have a second chance to air their views on the future of the former town hall tomorrow.

The first open day, held last month, attracted more than 100 people, most of whom gave their support to the council's plan to take over the building.

The grade two listed hall is owned by Wiltshire County Council, but the town council hopes to take it over for a nominal £1 fee.

People are being asked how they would like the historic building to be used.

The building was last used for the Porton Down inquest, which ended in November. It was gifted to the town in 1887 to mark the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria and was used as the town hall until the 1970s, when local government reorganisation meant ownership passed to West Wiltshire District Council, which sold it to the county council to be used as a magistrates' court.

The building will be open to the public on February 25 and 26.
