CHILDREN living on a Trowbridge estate are to get improved play facilities after a campaign by residents.

People in the College Road area of the town were angry that government money as part of the Home Zone scheme was not used for a much-needed revamp of the Beech Grove play area, but West Wiltshire District Council then announced an upgrade of the area would take place later this year.

Residents have been asked to choose between two options for the upgrade, both including new play equipment for younger children, but one also including a mini bicycle track.

Ward councillor Sarah Content, who is spearheading the consultation along with her Lib Dem colleague Jeff Osborn, said: "The council has always promised to upgrade this play area and the resources are now in place to carry out the work.

"Although there is a limited budget for the scheme, both options on the table have been costed and are affordable.

"This facility is for local people, so it is vital that as many residents as possible have their say."

Once an option has been chosen, work could start in the autumn.

District councillor Ernie Clark, the leisure, community issues and rural affairs portfolio holder, said: "This is a scheme that will benefit a large number of children and families, so it is important that we choose the option that best suits local needs."

A public exhibition of the proposals will be held at the Arc Theatre between 9.30am-12.30pm on January 31.
