IN reply to W Bunce's letter (Adver, Wednesday, January 19), no, he did not miss something with respect to the South West Regional Assembly.

The SWRA has been formed as another tier in government, along with all the associated costs to the taxpayer. It is not a directly elected body, but made up of councillors nominated as representatives of the local councils in the region, along with members of voluntary and business groups.

Our future is being decided by a quango in Taunton. Swindon has the say of incredibly only three members out of 117, one of which is all for expanding Swindon until it is not worth living in. So the reason for aiming another 24,000 homes at Swindon is probably because nowhere else in the South West wants them. Democracy in action, eh?

A HAYWARD
