PROPOSED changes to the uniform at the Stonehenge School have been labelled undemocratic and expensive by an Amesbury parent.

Caroline Pollard, who lives in Beverley Hills, said the school should have sought the views of parents and pupils, as the new uniform was very different and considerably more expensive.

She said she had spoken to many students and parents and a large majority appeared unhappy about the way the decision was made and about some of the changes, particularly the inclusion of a blazer.

Mrs Pollard (44) now wants parents who feel strongly about the matter to write to the headmaster and let him know their feelings.

"It will be too late complaining after their implementation in September," she told the Journal.

"I quite understand that not everybody will have the same view - but surely the school should know what the majority view is?"

Stonehenge students currently wear a white Aertex shirt, red-and-grey-striped tie, grey sweatshirt and black trousers.

From September, they will have to wear a shirt, jumper and blazer instead.

Mrs Pollard said the new uniform would cost parents at least £50 but this figure would be nearer £100 once they had bought a spare jumper and shirts.

"Most families have got more than two children at the school, too," she said.

"Can you imagine the cost?

"It's not as though they can rely on hand-me-downs."

Headteacher Nigel Roper said there had been a considerable period of consultation with pupils and parents.

He also said every stage of the process had been published in the school newsletter.

"Since the proposals were announced last September, I have only had four letters commenting on the changes," he said.

"Of those, two indicated that they didn't agree with them and one was complaining about the way the decision was reached."

Mr Roper said he had tried to keep costs as low as possible.

"Two of the major items in the uniform - black shoes and trousers - are not changing," he said.

"The next most expensive item will probably be the blazer, but I have had quotes as low as £18 for these and they should last at least a year.

"Not only is this good value for money but the students will also look smart."

The governing body is due to make a final decision on the proposed changes within the next few months.
