SALISBURY City caused one of the upsets of the season when they humbled runaway Ryman Premier Division leaders Yeading on Saturday.
Robbie Matthews and Craig Davis scored for Whites in a memorable 2-1 win over the hosts who earlier this month were the toast of the non-league game after their spirited FA Cup third round display against Newcastle United.
It was the first time City had enjoyed back-to-back league wins since August.
Their latest three-point haul lifted them out of the relegation zone and delighted manager Nick Holmes, although he was quick to call for a reality check.
"There's still a long way to go to make sure we're safe," he said. "It was a very enjoyable day but we have to keep our feet on the ground and not get carried away."
City have banked six from nine points since Holmes returned from the USA.
"Everything went to plan for us, but what you're seeing now isn't happening just because I'm back.
"The boys had already started to approach games better and we're now reaping the rewards of the hard work put in before I returned."
However, Holmes' plans to scupper the title favourites were almost wrecked by last-minute withdrawals from the squad.
Already without star striker Adam Wallace and Matt Holmes through suspension plus Wayne Turk and Glenn Howes through injury, Holmes had to field a team missing six regulars when skipper Scott Bartlett (ankle) and live-wire Matt Tubbs (knee) failed to recover from injuries sustained during training on Thursday night.
However, City stuck to their plan and could even have been three up at the break. It wasn't until the hosts made substitutions that they fought their way back into contention.
"For 60-65 minutes we were more or less in control," enthused the City boss. "They had a lot of possession, but never really threatened until they changed things."
Yeading had been unbeaten at home since early September.
"It was probably a good time to play them," added Holmes. "They've had so much adulation recently because of what they've achieved, but there's always a danger that you start to believe it all.
"I still think they'll win the league, but we competed for every loose ball and maybe it was a rude awakening for them."
City will look to continue their climb out of the danger zone on Saturday when they entertain Chelmsford City.
Salisbury's hopes of reaching the final of the Wiltshire Premier Shield were dashed on Tuesday evening when a much-changed side suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Chippenham Town.
Two second half goals by James Constable gave the Dr Martens Premier Division side a 5-4 aggregate victory.
Former Everton and Leeds United star Duncan McKenzie is the guest speaker at a fundraising sporting dinner being held at the club's Sarum Suite on Friday evening.
