BOGUS charities could be using the tsunami disaster to target unsuspecting members of the public, Wiltshire trading standards officers warned this week.
The county council's trading standards department urged people to be aware that the tsunami crisis has given those with less-than-charitable intentions an ideal opportunity to jump on the appeal bandwagon.
"If you receive a flyer or are approached by anyone claiming to be collecting money or clothes for charity, be sure they are genuine before donating," said the department.
"Callers claiming to represent a charity should be asked for their credentials and charity number.
"Always check charity registered numbers with the Charities Commission, on 0870 3330123.
"Most banks and many retailers will accept charity donations for the Tsunami Appeal."
Sue Wilkin, Wiltshire county council community support and education team leader, said: "Please remember to take precautions to safeguard your own security.
"Just because people claim to be collecting for charity, this doesn't guarantee they aren't criminals. If anyone calls at your door, please remember to Stop, Chain, Check."
