75774-81PENSIONERS in Swindon are missing out on benefits worth thousands of pounds a year. In an average month, the town's Age Concern office helps unlock annual benefits worth a total of £200,000.

But many pensioners still miss out.

Now a £13 million Government fund has been launched for campaigns across the country highlighting benefits available to pensioners. The cash will be available to local authorities, charities and disability groups.

Pensions Minister Malcolm Wicks said hard-to-reach groups, such the severely disabled and housebound were most likely to miss out.

Ann Hurcombe, the senior manager at Age Concern, in Milton Road, said: "This idea is welcome and badly needed.

"Benefits are not claimed for a variety of reasons. Many people see it as accepting charity and don't realise it is their right.

"Others are afraid of authority, while many are worried about filling in complex forms, but we are here to help them through that process."

Ann says she gets between 20 and 30 inquiries a week. The most common benefits left unclaimed include the new pensions credit, which tops up the pension according to need.

Other benefits are attendance allowance, carers' allowance and council tax benefit.
