Townspeople are expected to find out how much tax they will pay to Malmesbury Town Council tonight.

The policy and resources committee will decide the annual precept at a meeting in the town hall at 7pm.

The precept forms part of the council tax and last year amounted to £116,000.

Councillor Charles Vernon said: "I think there is no hope of people paying less. We spent £116,000 last year and it looks as if the amount will be similar this year. For example we spent £15,000 on play equipment at St Aldhelm's Mead and the new skate park will cost us £4,500. It takes money to maintain town council property."

Town councillors had previously hoped to set the budget earlier in the month. But the wrangle with the district council over the town hall's future prevented them from setting the financial priorities.
