PEWSEY played their part in raising funds for the victims of the Tsunami disaster, and came away with the bonus of a morale-boosting win.
Goals from Tom Richie and Adam Fields gave the hosts a deserved victory against the Wessex League outfit.
Vale manager Steve Wootton considered the game more than a charity match and said the victory will give his side confidence ahead of their next Hellenic League game at Witney United on February 5.
He said: "We need to get in the habit of winning games and this was a good start.
"The lads were happy with their win and their morale has been injected with confidence."
Pewsey, with no game Saturday, will have a job on their hands as Steve Wootton's squad gets smaller due to suspensions.
Striker and leading goalscorer Craig Wall is currently serving an 11-match ban for foul and abusive language. Captain Martin Churchward faces a ban after being sent off two weeks ago as does Steve Bush who was sent off in the game against Corsham last Saturday.
"Suspensions are hurting us, Craig will miss about 16 games in all."
Spectators for the charity match on Saturday were not charged an entrance fee for the match but were asked to make a small donation to the Tsunami instead.
Wootton was delighted that more than 50 fans turned up in the pouring rain, raising £151 for the appeal.
"That is not a bad sum of money to give to the charity. It was about time we did something to help, I even put a fiver in the tin."
For their kind donations the fans were treated to a highly contested game, with the first half an even affair.
The visitors could have gone into a three minute lead when a through ball found Dan Gain, but his shot flew wide.
Minutes later Downton again came close when a snap shot by Mark Gulliver also flew narrowly wide.
The first chance for Pewsey came on the 17th minute when Martin Churchward rose to head onto Adam Field, but the visiting keeper Glen Craven did well to hold Fields shot.
Andy Youngsam was denied by keeper Craven after being put through by Tom Ritchie on the 40th minute and the game went into the break at 0-0.
During the break the rain came and made play difficult but the players continued to look for that first goal,
Fields had a shot cleared off the line by a full back and Youngsam tried to chip the keeper but it went wide.
And as Pewsey put the pressure on Dave Marfleet rose to a Ritchie corner only to head wide on the 64th minute.
The deadlock was broken four minutes later when the ball fell to Ritchie to put the Vale into the lead.
Then a free kick by Ritchie was headed in by Fields at the back post to secure the win.
