NATIONAL Lottery cash will be needed to stage a £30,000 re-enactment of the Battle of Roundway Down this summer, say organisers.
Devizes Development Partnership is working with Kennet District Council, Wiltshire County Council and tenant farmer Jeremy Leonard to stage the mock battle on July 16 and 17.
Apart from the clash between Cavaliers and Roundheads on Roundway Down to commemorate the English Civil War battle of 1643, there will be displays and skirmishes between cavalry and infantry in the town centre.
Kairen Kellard from Kennet District Council said: "We want to involve the whole town in this event but also to attract people from further afield."
Entry will cost £4 for adults, £2 for children or £10 for a family ticket. Pitches for stalls are being offered at £35 for the two days.
Applications are being made to the Heritage Lottery Fund for financial support.
The organisers want to put up display panels on the battlefield that will take visitors on a guided tour around the area and tell visitors what took place 362 years ago when the Parliamentary forces came off worse.
