TRAVELLING the world is more important than settling down and starting a family that's what a third of young people think, according to a new survey.

The survey, carried out by Thomson Holidays, reveals that seeing the world is the top priority for a third of 25 to 34-year-olds in the next five years.

Just 25 per cent of those surveyed wanted to start a family and 10 per cent wanted to invest in property.

And 50 per cent said putting money aside for holidays is more important than saving up for a property, a car or a wedding.

The results of the survey come as no surprise to Old Town photographer Siobhan Boyle, 32, who has been with her partner Phil Brady, 32, for 12 years and for whom travelling is a priority.

She said: "I would rather spend money on travelling than buying a house. Renting in Swindon is quite expensive and it's dead money really but I'd rather compromise on that and see the world instead.

"Phil and I are very settled together and just want to have fun for a few more years. I feel no need to start a family now."

Siobhan and Phil have just returned from three weeks in India and they plan to return there as soon as possible.

Travel agent George Norcliffe, who owns Swindon Travel in Havelock Street, said: "I would say that young people put a different emphasis on their lives these days.

"They don't want to settle down until they have enjoyed themselves.

"There has been a big increase in people booking back-packing holidays or flight only tickets to Australia."
