Calne applied a little pressure on the top teams with this crushing victory on the common in Marlborough.

Impressive displays from Damon Murphy and Paul Jenkins kept the ball firmly in Calne's possession and the return of the substantial Daron Thomas was a welcome sight for Calne supporters and the defence was duly strengthened.

John Hope-Smith started off proceedings, with the first try of the day, by exploiting a small overlap. The space was created through second phase ball and nice interchanging from centres Neil Young and Guthrie Holliday.

Young halted a determined Marlborough attack by finishing a 40 yard solo effort. Centre partner Holliday added his own effort, thanks to a powerful swerving run.

Not to be out done Young notched up his second. Holliday supplied the ball and Young went a full 70 metres to double his try tally for the day and for the season.

This time Andrew Donegan added the extras and Calne were well and truly in the groove.

Holliday kept the heat on with is second, as the Calne backline started to look unstoppable.

During the half time break the weather deteriorated. A cold, wet wind set in forcing both sides to play a little tighter.

Although this initially suited Marlborough better, Calne's heavy weights soon started notching up the tries.

Outstanding openside, Damon Murphy, re-started proceedings nicely benefiting from some excellent support play.

Hooker, Mick Dyer, collected his first try for the club. The number two was the eventual beneficiary of a well worked rolling maul.

However the backs were able to show their wares again as Young completed his hatrick thanks to a Donegan break.

The front row wasn't finished and tighthead, Mat Arnold, outwitted the opposition by pouncing on a loose line-out ball.

Winger John Hope-Smith chipped the cold Marlborough defence and out sprinted the opposition cover and his team mates in the mad dash for the ball.

The final word was left to pacey full back James Gladding.

He joined the line at full tilt and left a much easier conversion for Donegan.

Calne are now third in the league thanks to this win and other results going their way, equal on pionts with fourth placed Cooper Avon Tyres of Melksham.

This leaves them one place ahead of their target and full of confidence and looking forward to the run in to the end of the season.

Calne host lowly Hungerford in the league this coming Saturday before two friendlies at the start of February.

The club are also still looking for prospective second graders.
