Can we be realistic about the canal which runs through Devizes. It is wonderful to have as it as industrial history and makes a good place for a hike.

But even with £50,000 spent on lighting it is not safe, convenient and accessible sustainable transport.

It is a narrow, single-file uneven, muddy footpath set into a steep sided deep cutting. The accessways from the roads down to the path are very steep and difficult for pushchairs, which can be heavy, and may not even be possible for wheelchair users. Arriving at the top of the slope, there is no safe standing area for you, your dog, toddlers, bicycle or wheelchair and nil visibility of the approaching traffic. If the money is available only for sustainable transport links are these not the appropriate criteria?

If the county council is serious about this, firstly; spend the money on cutting back the embankment to widen the path for two people to pass safely; spend it on levelling and

surfacing the path; spend it on making the access points less steep and safe to approach by road.

Even spend the money on clearing out the fallen trees which obstruct and clutter the water.

Then talk about well-lit sustainable transport links.
