WE recycle bottles, tins and paper in the council facilities. Virtually everything organic goes onto the compost heap. So we put out one black bag of rubbish a week, usually half full.
Now it seems that we are to have forced upon us an enormous wheelie bin, far in excess of our requirements. I expect that it will take twice as long to empty the wheelie bins as it takes to throw dustbin bags onto the dustcart. Collection is to be fortnightly which is unsatisfactory. Even though it contains virtually nothing organic our dustbin is pretty smelly in summer, even after a week.
For those without compost heaps, their bins will be thoroughly unsanitary after a fortnight.
Last summer we took a holiday cottage in Norfolk, where they operated the proposed system and we found to our disgust that the bin was full of rotting food and maggots.
We will continue to recycle in the council facilities, even if the proposed system is introduced because a collection every fortnight is inadequate for our purpose.
The recycling box will therefore be unused and if Coun John Reid gets his way we will be fined for not using it. Is this as an appropriate reward for our recycling efforts over the years?
