I have been reading in the Gazette that there is a proposal to change household waste collection to being on a fortnightly basis in wheelie bins.

I heartily disapprove of this move for two reasons.

The first is that it will cost the taxpayers a vast amount of money to change, not only to wheelie bins, but also for the purchase of the huge waste disposal lorries fitted to cope with lifting these bins.

This money could be much better used elsewhere in the community in retaining free parking in the Market Place, for instance. (As, too, could money be saved by not putting street lighting along the canal towpath.)

The second, and paramount reason for my disapproval, is that it will be a great risk to health and safety, to have collection on a fortnightly basis only.

Old food stuffs, in particular, will be rancid, mouldy, diseased and fly blown, if left over the usual week in a bin.

The idea of a town's worth of bins, all smelling to high heaven, in close proximity to each other, is not at all a happy one winter or summer. It will be bad for the impression given to

visitors too.

Kennet District Council should rethink this risky and unhealthy proposal and save up for wheelie bins on a weekly basis in due course.
