SURELY it is our duty as residents to help the district council meet the Government target of 25 per cent residual waste.
Where I live, we have black recycling boxes for bottles, cans, foil, textiles and paper already. This is collected fortnightly. This must reduce the amount of residual waste.
In our household the black sack for anything which cannot be recycled is only a third full every week. It usually contains all the (in my view) over packaged material and is collected every week.
Many of my neighbours appear to have a similar amount so perhaps we could manage with a collection on alternative weeks to recyclable materials.
When the waste is collected in this street it's done in a matter of minutes, swiftly, efficiently and quietly.
From experience I've noticed where wheelie bins are used it's slow and very noisy.
I realise that people with families will generate more rubbish, but I think this could be reduced if plastic bottles for milk and soft drinks could be collected on recycling days. Also we are fortunate to have an excellent centre on the Hopton estate where almost everything can be taken free of charge.
The sum of £165,000 from Wiltshire County Council is a lot of money must it be used for this scheme? There are so many pressing issues.
Finally, I do not want a wheelie bin. They are large, ugly and smelly. I do not want it cluttering up my front garden.
