GAZETTE & HERALD: An illegal immigrant who glassed a man in a Chippenham nightclub has been remanded in custody by a judge at Swindon Crown Court.
Agron Hoxha had been arguing with other clubbers in Buds when he threw the glass into his victim's face in the early hours of March 28.
As a result plumber Richard Henley lost four pints of blood, suffered a broken nose and had to have stitches in the wound between his eyes at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.
After hearing that the immigration service had refused Kosovan Hoxha leave to stay in Britain Judge Tom Longbotham remanded him in custody.
The 28-year-old asylum seeker was in the town centre club at 2am when Corsham plumber Richard Henley saw a row involving a woman he knew.
Mr Henley, who was on a night out with his wife, went over to try and calm the situation between the two women and two men when the glass was flung in his face, severing an artery.
Hoxha, of Chestnut Road, Chippenham, pleaded guilty to a charge of grievous bodily harm.
Stephen Mooney, defending, said that his client admitted the offence on the basis that he had been reckless.
"It was an unfortunate incident in a nightclub where out of frustration at what had happened before he threw a glass which was going to cause injury if it collided with someone and it did cause injury," he said.
Mr Mooney said Hoxha had come to this country from his native Kosovo but was refused permission to stay.
He said "He has been in discussion with immigration about the best way to return to Kosovo and how he can do it without deportation, and that is what he hopes to do."
Although he would be forced to leave the country he said that his client, who had been living with his girlfriend in Devizes since the incident, would return to the court if he was granted bail.
"Had he been an individual not inclined to turn up he could have fled the jurisdiction," Mr Mooney said.
Adjourning the case for pre-sentence reports Judge Tom Longbotham remanded Hoxha in custody.
The court heard that the relevant papers had been served on Hoxha so that a judge could recommend he be deported at the end of any prison term.
