STAFF and shoppers at Safeway in Warminster had a lucky escape after a motorist ploughed her car into the supermarket.
The 67-year-old driver from Upton Scudamore smashed her Rover 6 Series into the Weymouth Street store on Friday afternoon.
No-one was hurt in the incident but the driver's 94-year-old mother was in the front seat and both were said to be quite shocked.
Andrew Hay, training manager, said: "I was standing over by the counter and I heard a massive crash.
"At first I thought one of the stacks of beer or wine had fallen over. I walked over and saw the car had crashed through the window."
Mr Hay said his initial fears were for the driver and the passenger of the car.
"There were two elderly women in the car and straight away we called the emergency services.
"The fire brigade had to pull the car out and then got the two ladies out safely.
"They were a bit shocked but okay. As you can imagine this is not something that happens every day.
"The two girls on the checkouts near where it happened were quite shaken up.
"We made sure they were okay and then sent them home for the afternoon."
Mr Hay was full of praise for his staff who he said kept calm under difficult circumstances.
"We have several staff who are trained in first aid and they helped out to make sure everything was okay," he said.
"This is my first week as a manager and there has been a lot going on.
"We caught a shoplifter this morning as well so I don't think this has been a normal Friday.
"I have learnt an awful lot though and the professionalism of the team has been fantastic."
One employee who asked not to be named said: "It was lucky that no one was walking there at the time.Who knows what could have happened?"
PC Adrian Giles from Westbury Police attended the scene.
He said: "The driver was with her 94-year-old mother and was parking her car in the disabled space at the front of the store.
"For some unexplained reason she went forward and crashed into the front windows.
"The girls on the checkout got quite a shock but thankfully no one was injured.
"There was quite substantial damage and the ambulance attended but no one was taken to hospital."
