WORK has started on a multi-million pound development set to rejuvenate Trowbridge town centre.

Preliminary work to clear the former Tesco site in St Stephen's Place began on Tuesday and bulldozers are due to move in shortly to begin demolition of the now derelict supermarket building.

The £25m project by Thiyan Investments will include new shops, a restaurant, bar and gym.

The project is the first to be brought forward under the Vision for Trowbridge framework, which provides urban design guidelines for all development in the town.

Geoff Button, from Thiyan Investments, said: "Now we have started on site, we hope to confirm our tenants for the units very soon."

While the work is carried out 20 car parking places at the St Stephen's Place car park will be temporarily unavailable.
