16492WELL-known landlords will call last orders for the final time this weekend. Clive Cater, 61, and wife Janet, 57, licensees at the Anchor and Hope, are leaving the Frome Road pub on Sunday.

Mr and Mrs Cater have been in the trade for 30 years and their reputation has built up a steady following.

Mr Cater said he would be sorry to leave, having made so many good friends.

"We have been in the pub business for so long we have seen a lot of changes," he said. "We have had some fantastic customers that have become really good friends. We have always been a small and friendly local pub full of local customers.

"Too many pubs these days are just large and bland with no character."

Mr and Mrs Cater's career began in June 1975 at the Stallards pub in Trowbridge.

After 15 years they were forced out by rising rents and ran other south west venues, including the Labour Club in Melksham before they returned to Trowbridge in 1999 to the Anchor.

Mr Cater plans to retire, but his wife has not quite had enough and wants to stay in the restaurant trade.
