A rare waxwing spotted in Trowbridge this weekRARE visitors from Scandinavia have been causing a flutter among Wiltshire birdwatchers. Waxwings hardly ever visit Wiltshire, but spotters have seen several in Trowbridge Park.
The uncommon bird switches to a diet of berries in winter and often heads south in search of food.
Recent reports suggest larger than normal numbers of waxwings have headed to the UK this year, but Wiltshire has never been a prime destination.
Nick Gay, who works at Tattoo World, Church Street, Trowbridge, saw three waxwings in the town park on Monday.
He said: "They go across the country, but it's very rare to get them in Wiltshire. If you go down there now and look, you can't miss them."
They are the size of a starling with light brown plumage, red markings round the eyes, a crest and an orange-tipped black tail.
