Asa FreemanPOLICE have released CCTV images of two men they believe could hold vital information in the Asa Freeman assault inquiry.

Mr Freeman, 32, was this week described by police as 'gravely ill' in Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, following the incident in Silver Street earlier this month.

Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Capstick, who is leading the investigation, said: "The inquiry is progressing, but we know that there are still witnesses whom we have not yet been able to trace, whom I urge to contact us.

"Asa is still gravely ill. It is imperative we find out exactly what happened that evening and I need the help and co-operation of everyone."

Police released CCTV footage taken at the nearby Snooker Club just before midnight on January 8 in the hope of identifying the two men.

A mobile police station was set up in Silver Street a week after the incident to show people images of people detectives wanted to trace.

Twenty officers from north and west Wiltshire were in the town, talking to people and asking them to look at the footage, and stills taken from it, before filling out a questionnaire.

About 500 people in the town between 10pm on Saturday and 3am on Sunday looked at the footage.

Det Insp Matt Jones said: "Anniversary visits are used regularly in incidents of this nature and are quite successful."

The operation led to police identifying all but two of the 13 people they wanted to trace and officers are now renewing appeals for the remaining two men to come forward.

Mr Freeman, of Church Walk, was allegedly punched to the ground, hitting his head on the pavement and sustaining serious head injuries.

He is now out of intensive care.

Anyone who can help police with their inquiries should contact the incident room on (01380) 735735 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
