MARK Simmons believes his CATs side will have to rely on winning promotion "through the back door" after drawing with rivals Westbury on Saturday.

Despite recovering from a 10-0 deficit, CATs are now five points behind Dorset and Wilts Division One leaders Corsham and three points behind Westbury.

With only one team winning automatic promotion, Simmons admits first place is probably beyond his side's grasp and is hoping the league decide for a change in structure.

He said: "We really needed to win to keep ourselves in the hunt and now I think we are going to have to rely on getting second place.

"No-one ever knows how many teams will be allowed promotion at the end of the season, but at the moment it is only one.

"We need the league to have re-think and allow two teams up because we don't really want to be playing at this level of rugby again next season."

Scrum half Tom Barrell scored a try for the hosts in the opening exchanges and Phil Stockley converted to give Westbury the early advantage.

Westbury pressed forward for the remainder of the half but some defiant defending from the visitors kept themselves in the game.

Five minutes after the break Stockley kicked a penalty to extend his side's lead, but CATs fought back well.

Richard Woolford kicked a penalty to reduce the deficit to seven points and this was cancelled out by a try from Jeremy Flower and a conversion from Woolford.

Westbury press officer Roy Wakefield said: "It was a fair result but in reality Westbury should have had the match sewn up by the end of the first half. We could just not deliver the knockout blow."
