REVITALISED Wootton Bassett were victorious for the second weekend in succession enjoying a derby victory and booking their place in round two of the Supplementary Cup in the process.

On the back of their first league success since September last weekend, Bassett were good value for a 2-1 triumph at Fairford on Saturday.

Caretaker boss Chris Jones isn't taking credit for any tactical masterstrokes, insisting the reason for the reversal of fortune was a simple one.

"We've tweaked a few things but the main thing we've done is try to give the lads some self-belief, belief in their own ability, which gets knocked after a losing streak.

"They're starting to get that back."

Andy Tiler galloped through the middle to fire Bassett into an early lead.

Chris Mills' deflected effort doubled the advantage a minute before half-time.

Fairford pressed hard in the second period, but Lee Clark's late consolation goal was their only reward.

"I was very pleased. We've could have scored a couple to be honest," added Jones.

"The guys have all worked really hard.

"I'd rather have taken three points in the league, but the cup is a nice distraction and a good chance to build some confidence."

Shrivenham join Bassett in the next round, but manager Alan Dyton was decidedly unimpressed by his troops as they squeezed past Division One East makeweights Letcombe.

Tate Hulbert's first-half treble put Shrivvy in the comfort zone but despite dominating the second half, Letcombe reduced the deficit to one resulting in a nervy last 20 minutes.

"This performance was not good enough," said Dyton.

"At half-time with the game won I must admit to turning my thoughts to next week's game with Headington.

"This performance will definitely not be good enough for that."

Malmesbury bowed out after losing 3-0 at home to Banbury Reserves.

The first goal came from a free-kick that was cleared into the path of Ricky Johnson and his shot took a huge deflection on its way in.

Darren Pond was then upended in the box by Jake Fisher and Nick Jones netted from the spot.

Another penalty condemned the Vics to defeat, with Jonathan Wilkins taking out Troy Bryan and Dave Nicholls successful from 12 yards.

Elsewhere, a brace from Scott Cameron gave Winterbourne a 2-0 victory over Purton, who had Simon Pugh sent off for two bookable offences.

But Cirencester United went through 3-1 at Ross, with Ian McSherry's double decisive.
