LEADERS Westlecot have extended their lead at the top of the East section of the Wessex League.

They recorded their fifth win in a row with a comfortable 92-70 victory over West Berks (Newbury).

Westlecot took the honours on all four rinks to collect a maximum 16 points.

This increased their lead at the top of the table to 11 points over Oxford & District and effectively clinched a last 16 place in the end of season play-offs.

At home Dave Snell's rink were always in charge. They led 11-4 at 10 ends and 21-10 at 15 before securing a 10-shot victory.

However, on the other green Mike Jackson's quartet made a slow start and trailed 8-4 after five ends.

They clawed their way back to lead 18-15 at 15 ends. The 21st and final end was killed twice and with the four-hour time limit expired Jackson claimed a two shot win at 20 ends.

Away at Newbury both of the rinks skipped by Martin Hope and Chris Cheesley trailed at five ends.

But aided by a run of eight winning ends Hope went from 7-2 down to lead 10-7 at 10 and 19-12 at 15 ends before securing a seven-shot win.

Cheesley was 5-3 down at five ends but led 12-6 at 10 and 22-14 at 18 before he was pegged back by a four on the last to win by three shots.

Thamesdown were without a game as they had already played Rivermead two weeks ago winning 79-75 (14pts-2).

Their postponed match against Carterton has been re-arranged for this coming Sunday.

Westlecot's last two section games are against Rivermead on February 13 while they face local rivals Thamesdown on February 27.

Apart from the two matches mentioned above Thamesdown also have to play West Berks on February 13.
