75875-18CHILDREN from a Swindon primary school were victorious in a national chess competition.

The two teams of gifted youngsters from Lawn Junior School both came top for their age groups in the English Primary School's Chess Association competition in Basildon on Saturday.

There were different competitions held throughout the country and the top four teams from each locations will be playing in the semi final competition on May 19 in Brean Sands in Somerset.

There was an under nine's team and an under 11's team that took part from the Lawn Junior School.

Mum Dawn Burroughs, 43, has a son in the under 11s team, Luke Burroughs, ten, and two sons in the under nine's team, Adam Burroughs, eight and Jamie Burroughs, six.

She said: "I'm really proud of the children. There is a chess team that meets every Friday after school and the children have excellent coaching from Maureen Debbage.

"There was a real buzz at the competition on Friday so the semi final in May is going to be extra exciting."

The members Lawn Junior School's under 11 team are Harry Cleeves from year five and year six pupils, Luke Burroughs, Fergus Cowie, Matthew Whitehead, Kiran Parmar and Harriet Davide.

The under-nines team are year four pupils Adam Burroughs, Gavin Cowie, Joshua Whitehead and Adam Parmar, year three pupil, Megan Cleeves and year one pupil James Burroughs.
