SPRINKLERS must be fitted in every home as part of a nation-wide fire safety campaign, a Swindon MP has claimed.
Julia Drown (Swindon South) said that the greater use of sprinklers in homes will cut the number of deaths caused by fire.
During a debate in Parliament, Ms Drown said fire authorities across the country should follow the example of Wiltshire Fire Service, which recently fitted sprinklers into all council houses.
She said: "A recent fire in one such house only did minimal damage. The fire service reported to me how glad it was that sprinklers were there, because otherwise there could have been extensive damage and, for all we know, loss of life." She said the fire service had also encouraged all schools in Swindon and Wiltshire to fit sprinkler systems.
The MP called on the Government to launch a publicity campaign to promote the use of sprinklers and for ministers to fund pilot studies to discover how to make it affordable to widely introduce sprinkler systems into homes.
