TOWNS and villages are needed to take part in projects to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has received a grant of £90,000 over three years to encourage community action on climate change.
The money, from Defra's environmental action fund, will only be able to support 12 towns and villages in Wiltshire and the trust needs volunteers to suggest which areas should be considered.
The trust wants to set up a programme along the lines of Fairtrade Towns where communities can check actions such as insulating houses, making local food available to cut down on transport or putting renewable energy installations in village halls.
The intention is that the 12 communities will serve as examples of climate friendly living that can be replicated across Wiltshire and the UK.
Jane Laurie, head of sustainable communities at the trust, said: "This grant will allow us to support communities in setting up high profile, attention grabbing projects that will make people aware there are whole communities working to make things better."
