CORSHAM went through to the third round of the Les Philips Cup but were made to work for their victory by the struggling Screwfix First Division side on Saturday.

Three second half goals saw the home side progress but manager Colin Bush was impressed with the side that had only managed a 1-1 draw with Biddestone a week before.

He said: "They were a good side and I can't see them being near the bottom of the league for much longer."

The first half was well contested with both sides having a flurry of chances at goal. Somehow the ball stayed out of the net until the break. Corsham had the best opportunity when he saw his header fly narrowly over the crossbar.

"It should have been at least 3-1 at half time on the amount of clear cut chances we both had.

"They did well to hold out but in the end our league position shone through and we wore them down."

It was almost on the hour mark when Corsham finally took the lead. A cross ricocheted off striker Alan Griffin and fell luckily to fellow forward Toby Colbourne to tap in at the back post.

Shortly after the lead was doubled when Griffin was released to run down the right flank. His inch perfect cross was met by former Chippenham defender Colin Towler and he tucked the ball home from close range.

Alan Webb, who has struggled to hold a place in the first team this season, was on the end of a cross that flashed across the face of the goal to turn in his third goal of the season.

Bush added: "They made it awkward for us but it is important that we are in the next round."
