TOWNS and villages across Wiltshire will get thousands of pounds to help them be more environmentally friendly.

The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has been awarded a Government grant worth £90,000 over three years to help 12 communities to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent.

But the areas have not yet been chosen and the trust is calling on volunteers to come forward with ideas.

Jane Laurie, head of sustainable communities at the trust, said: "There are masses of people out there who are doing marvellous things to save energy in their own homes, but none of these actions are visible, so they feel theirs is a lone voice in the world.

"This grant will allow us to support communities in setting up high profile, attention grabbing projects that will make people aware there are whole communities working to make things better for the environment.

"The more voices that are added to the climate change debate, the more swiftly everybody will adopt a climate-friendly lifestyle."

Under the project, funded by Department of the Environment Food and Rural Affairs environmental action fund, the communities will draw up checklists of actions such as insulating houses or making local food available to cut down on transport.
