I WRITE concerning the correspondence about council cuts to the voluntary sector of the town.

I hope you will forgive me for a somewhat cynical view.

Last week a public event was held in the town for three days at which 51 voluntary groups displayed their work.

We have seen how politicians have given their tuppenny ha'penny comments about the dwindling pot of money for grants. We are tired of their posturings in the run-up to the General Election.

All the political representatives were invited to visit and meet those who had worked hard to present a shop window to the public.

And how many of those invited bothered to make the effort?

Too few to appreciate what goes on.

Many were conspicuous by their absence which only shows where their priorities lie.

They know who they are and some day they will be swept into oblivion by events but the real people in the community who work often unsung will still be here making life better. Speed the day when those who think they can lecture us are silenced forever.
