This was a deeply disappointing result for the Devizes squad who matched their opposition in almost all aspects of the game other than their ability to convert pressure into points.

For long periods of the game Devizes camped in the Wootton Bassett quarter, only to lose possession from crooked lineout throws or knock-ons with the try line beckoning.

The reverse was true of Wootton Bassett who worked hard to create their opportunities and each time seemed to have the knack of coming up with the points on the board.

The first half was only ten minutes old when Devizes overcommitted at a maul leaving their defence stretched. A straightforward move along the backs was enough to create an overlap that was gratefully accepted by the Wootton Bassett wing who easily scored in the corner.

For the rest of the first half Devizes had the edge both in possession and territory but tenacious defence by Wootton Bassett and the Devizes fondness for spurning overlaps meant that they trailed by five points at the turnaround.

The Devizes players and coaches were confident the game would be won in the second half and Wootton Bassett had to withhold concerted pressure for the first ten minutes, but frustratingly Devizes were once again unable to cross the line.

This weakness was encapsulated in a move that began with excellent work by the forwards providing a two-man overlap with only 15 metres to the try line. Not for the first time in the game the ball was knocked on.

Wootton Bassett responded immediately to their let-off by creating a good move of their own.

Starting from an innocuous position in midfield the ball was spun along the backs who for the second time in the match managed to create an overlap for the wing to score unopposed.

With the conversion missed Devizes still obviously believed it was in them to pull the game round and continued to contest strongly but again it was Wootton Bassett who came away with the points this time from a good break through a packed midfield.

This was obviously not going to be the Saddlebacks' day and towards the end a speculative kick ahead by Wootton Bassett bounced wickedly and straight into the arms of the player following up.

Devizes coach Roy Farrant singled out Dan Lock as man of the match.
