WESTBURY United boss Paul Brickley believes he cost his side two points after a second half collapse on Saturday.

Leading 3-0 at half-time, Westbury contrived to concede three goals in 17 second half minutes with Brickley accepting full responsibility.

He said: "That was the worst weekends since I took over as manager because no side should allow themselves to lose a three goal lead.

"I made changes in the second half, because I thought the game was won and didn't want to bring players all the way to Minehead and not play them. It backfired on me.

"I have to learn from that because I should have kept things the same. It was very nave and shows I still have plenty to learn as a manager. I am still serving my apprenticeship. I need to be stronger and meaner."

A double strike from Marc Lanfear and a header from Mark Pearce had put the visitors in control but goals from Gary Bennett, Sean Kenny and Luke Taylor, in the last 17 minutes, earned Minehead an unlikely point.

The game ended in controversy as, after protests that Taylor's 82nd minute equaliser had not crossed the line, young substitute Rob Taylor thought he had restored Westbury's lead only to see the referee judged the ball had not gone in.

But Brickley, who took over as manager two months ago, refused to use this an excuse.

He said: "The way the game ended does not make any difference because we still should not have conceded three goals.

"We should have been shutting up shop at 3-0 and the fact we didn't is partly down to me. Having said that the players who were left on the pitch have to take a look at themselves as well.

"In the first half we were exceptional and played some really good football and after the game their supporters said we were the best side they had played this season. But it is easy to say that when you recover from 3-0."

Westbury started well and on four minutes took the lead after Lanfear scored from close range, following good work from Justin Tugwell.

Lanfear doubled his side's lead on 38 minutes with a lob from 20 yards while Pearce got on the end of Nick Beales' cross minutes later.

At the start of the second half, Lanfear, Steve Seals, Paul Beavers, and Pete Ayton squandered chances to extend Westbury's lead and they were made to pay.

Bennett's powerful header on 73 minutes pulled Minehead back into the game and three minutes later Kenny had reduced the deficit to just one goal with a low finish.

Taylor then equalised on 82 minutes before Westbury's Rob Taylor was denied a last gasp winner.

Westbury entertain struggling Saltash tomorrow and Brickley welcomes back Lewis Porter and Wayne Wheeler into his squad.
