A WARMINSTER man was jailed for a day after admitting possessing drugs and a lock knife. Alan Hole, 35, of Cotton House Gardens, had the knife and 1.6g of cannabis resin confiscated when he was arrested on December 10.

Hole admitted charges of possessing an offensive weapon and possessing a banned drug when he appeared before magistrates in Chippenham on Thursday.

Rhys Davies, prosecuting, said police found the items on Hole after arresting him for another matter.

"He said he used the knife for general work and there was no reason for having it around with him at that time," said Mr Davies.

Roger Stanbury, defending, said Hole was staying with a friend and had very little money to spend.

He said: "He is in the habit of providing a lot of his food from skips at places like supermarkets.

"He's been out of trouble since December 2003. That is quite significant when you look back through previous years when several serious offences appear year on year."

Hole was arrested again after he failed to appear in court on January 6 and spent a night in the cells before his court appearance on Thursday.

Magistrates fined Hole £20 for this and for the other offences and ordered him to remain in the court building until 4pm, which meant he was in custody for 24 hours.
