CHILDREN at a Swindon nursery couldn't keep their tongues still when they took up the Chatterbox Challenge.

The youngsters at the Jigsaw Day Nursery in Pipers Way are hoping they have raised £200 for charity by singing songs and telling stories.

The cash will go to the I Can Charity, which helps children with speech and language difficulties.

During the day the children were involved in activities using props they had made themselves.

Nicky Elkins, who is room manager at the nursery and helped to organise the event, said: "The children performed five songs, two of which they had chosen themselves. They sang The Hairy Scary Castle and My Grandma Had a Flea because they are their favourite songs at the moment.

"They dressed up with masks and had props such as a teapot and a flea. The actions the children performed while singing help improve verbal and non-verbal communications."

"We have had a couple of children in the nursery who have had speech problems, so we thought this would be a good chance to give something back to the charity.

"We hope to have raised £200. At the moment we already have £140 but we haven't had all the sponsorship forms back yet.

"The day went really well. We have videoed it for the parents so they can see it in the nursery. And the children got a chance to perform and use language. They have been told where the money is going so they are starting to get an understanding that not everybody is the same as they are."
