THE owner of the former Ushers bottling plant in Trowbridge has hit back after criticism that its redevelopment plans do not harmonise with the Vision for Trowbridge.

Borric Properties Ltd has criticised developer and site owner Mystique and submitted its own alternative masterplan to West Wiltshire District Council, through OSEL Architects, the firm behind the redevelopment of the former Tesco site.

Mystique spokesman Howard Crews said: "We have never heard of this company nor have we received an approach from them in respect of our ownership.

"It is hard to understand the motives behind their proposals, particularly as they have no interest in the site.

"The Inspector and the Secretary of State confirmed the scheme complied with the aspirations of the Vision for Trowbridge strategy, the only objection was to the frontage of 10 houses on British Row."

Mystique Ltd hopes to use the site, which has been vacant for nearly five years, for a mixed retail, residential and leisure development.

The plans were called in by the Secretary of State last year and a public inquiry took place in May.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister rejected the plans on the grounds of the design of homes along British Row but the company has since submitted a revised proposal to the district council.

Mr Crews said: "We are hopeful they will see the opportunity to bring forward new shopping facilities and a large number of new homes for this derelict brownfield site at the earliest opportunity.

"It really is time for the development of this important site to be delivered."

Jersey-based firm Borric Properties is proposing the site be used for 242 new homes, along with a community centre, pre-school and shops.

The masterplan is not a formal planning application and has been submitted to the council to see if it would be acceptable under the Vision for Trowbridge.

Spokesman Simon Hoare said: "The Mystique scheme is not in line with the Vision for Trowbridge.

"We wanted to show the council there is an alternative scheme which could be achieved that does accord with the Vision."

Mr Hoare confirmed Borric Properties has made no attempt to buy the site.
