HOUSING developer Wainhomes has said it will wait until May before it makes any alterations to a controversial steel fence at Vowley View, Wootton Bassett.

Wainhomes had agreed to alter the fence, which was erected in December, after local residents campaigned to have it removed, claiming it was an eyesore. But the developer has now written to nearby residents saying there will be no change until May.

Resident Georgina Mason said: "Is there something going to happen between now and May that we don't know about?"

But Stephen Owen, chairman of Wainhomes Northwest, said: "May is a sensible time to do it. I don't want to be putting fences up and down the whole time.

"By May the local planning inquiry will have met and we will have a better idea of what will be happening.

"We don't want to create a furore and if residents want to write to me or call me then of course they can."

Last week Wootton Bassett Town Council formed a working group to discuss proposals for developing land next to Vowley View and Interface Business Park.

It will meet Wainhomes to alleviate fears the proposals will spoil the landscape.
