CONSERVATIVE Fire spokes-man Philip Hammond has attacked the Government for putting its political agenda ahead of public safety.
The Government intends to announce the location of the eight new Regional Control Centres, which will replace the 45 existing control centres outside London in late spring, which is likely to be just after the General Election.
This would mean the South West, including Wiltshire, would be run from one single control room. Mr Hammond said: "The Government is playing politics with the fire service and as a result putting the public in real danger. Fire safety is far too important to be subordinated to political agendas. It's time John Prescott abandoned his failed dream of regionalising England."
The government wants fire services in Dorset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Avon, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall to be run from one control room.
