IAN WOAN'S unexpected elevation to first team coaching duties will catapult him into the visitors dug-out at Boundary Park today although it could prove to be a bitter-sweet occasion.
Ironically, Mike Walsh's departure means Woan is likely to miss out on his first taste of glory in management.
While the 37-year-old will be helping Andy King and Alan Reeves to direct matters on the pitch at Oldham, his Under 18 side will be looking to wrap up the South West Conference title.
A point at Yeovil today would be enough to clinch some silverware and Woan is gutted to be missing out.
The youngsters are also disappointed, judging by some anonymous text messages left on his mobile phone.
He said: "I switched on my phone to read 'rumour has it that you're abandoning us. Judas."
"I know they're only joking but it is disappointing that I can't be there. It is isn't helped by the fact that Iffy Onuora has to take the Under 16s. It might be left to Roger the physio to do the honours if we are successful.
"Hopefully the lads can do it at Yeovil. They've been pushed from pillar to post in recent months but I'm delighted with the way they've responded to me."
As for all the drama at senior level Woan is not getting carried away by events of recent days.
He said: "It certainly isn't a case of stepping into Mike Walsh's shoes at all. I'm relishing the chance to learn more from the gaffer.
"It has certainly been a busy few months for me. I never realised just how much preparation is needed. The gaffer is working at it 24/7."
As for his duties today Woan said: "I'd imagine the first half will be spent on the phone with the manager relaying his instructions from the stand."
Alan Reeves will also pitch in but to a lesser degree as he is set to be among the substitutes today.
