Supermarine players answered Mark Collier's midweek rallying cry with a convincing derby triumph against Oxford City.

In truth Marine ran out much more comfortable winners than the scoreline suggested and the win proved most valuable as Marine's closest rivals in Division One West all picked up points.

The home side threatened first with JP Mills firing just wide from an Adie Adams cross after five minutes before Mark Draycott saw a glancing header well saved by Matt Finlay.

Oxford caused Marine problems with a well worked long throw routine Andy Ballad setting Chris Harper free with the throw but Harper saw his first-time strike blocked by Tom King.

The hosts settled and began to command the play, another pre-planned set piece routine carved out the first goal. An in-swinging free-kick from Mills was met on the volley at the back post by Copp who was left free to plant the ball past Finlay.

Almost straight from the restart Marine doubled their advantage. A speculative ball was pumped forward in the direction of Draycott however rather than leaving it for the untroubled Finlay, Andy Ballard mis-headed straight to new boy Karl Palmer who stayed calm under pressure to crash home a 35-yard strike for a perfect debut goal.

Mills was unlucky to see his dipping shot shave the woodwork while Palmer also saw a perfectly struck drive palmed away by Finlay.

A double substitution after the interval provided the kick start the visitors were looking for, as on the hour mark substitute Colin Simpson rounded off a fine City move involving the dangerous Harper to pull a goal back.

Simpson tapped in from close range after Harper had picked out the burly centre forward with an inch perfect pass.

Supermarine were creating chances on the break as Oxford committed more men forward in an attempt to nick an equaliser.

Mills shot over from a free-kick on the edge of the City area, Draycott's extravagant back-heel from close range came back off the woodwork before Finlay denied Giles Harris with a first-class reaction stop.

Not even an elated Swindon Town fan could disrupt Marine's performance.

Reacting to the news of two quick fire goals at Oldham, the fan took to the pitch to make his feeling towards the travelling Oxford fans known, but he was quickly dealt with.

The disruption failed to prevent Supermarine from holding out to pick up the three points and the final whistle was met by the loudest cheer at Hunts Copse this season from a home crowd dominated by Town supporters that had turned up to support Marine against the old enemy.
