GRAHAM HATHERALL is through to the final stages in the Champion of Champions competition. The Westlecot bowler booked his place in the last 16 at Warners, Hayling Island, on March 19/20, with success in the West Regional Area 1 play-offs.
In the regional final held at Dolphin IBC, Poole, Hatherall beat Banbury's Calvin Carpenter 21-15.
The former England indoor international came from 5-0 down to lead Carpenter 6-5 and moved further ahead.
Hatherall then maintained at least a three or four shots advantage before extending it to six on the last end for a 21-15 victory.
Earlier he had thrashed Andrew Owens (St Andrews, Weston-super-Mare) 21-6 and then defeated Clive Graves, (Slade, Buckingham) in the regional semi-final 21-17.
Hatherall is still involved in three of the four major national indoor championship competitions pairs, triples and fours.
He has qualified for the area final in all three events and is therefore one step away from the finals at the English Indoor Bowling Association headquarters at Melton Mowbray from April 9-17.
Mike Jackson is also through to three area finals along with Hatherall.
In the pairs area semi-finals Hatherall and Jackson were drawn at Thornbury.
They trailed Keith Williams and his partner for most of the game and were 18-10 down at 15 ends. But they won the next six with counts of 2, 1, 1, 1, 4 and 3 for a 22-18 victory.
In the final they will face Richard Turvey and his partner from Whitchurch, who beat Westlecot's Barry Sictorness and Mark Dyer 19-11.
Hatherall and Jackson were joined by Ian Jefferies in the triples semi-final and demolished Chris Messer's trio on their own rink at Clevedon.
They conceded two singles but then raced away with the match, a halt being called after 15 ends with the Westlecot trio 26-4 up.
In the area final they will face Paul Bryant's trio from Thornbury who eliminated Westlecot's Mel Biggs, Dyer and Neil Hope.
Hatherall and Jackson qualified for their third area final with another comfortable victory, this time in the fours.
Together with lead John Thomas and skip Neil Smith they thrashed Tim Lock's quartet from Nailsea 36-5, the towel being thrown in after only 14 ends.
The area fours final will be an all-Westlecot affair between Thomas, Jackson, Hatherall and Smith, against the rink of Biggs, Jamie Titcombe, Dyer and Hope.
It will be played on Sunday at Westlecot (2pm).
And to ensure that Westlecot will have a representative in each of the four major national events, Neil Smith has qualified to meet Bristol's Ryan Collier in the area singles final.
