Ref. 75903-44A SWINDON school has launched a new scheme to tackle the playground bullies.
Toothill Primary School, in Stokesay Drive, has introduced a buddy system which gives youngsters the chance to approach one of the trained fellow pupils with any concerns they have.
Headteacher Martin Cowell said: "We've got 11 children who have become buddies and they will help support the others in the playground.
"I'm very proud of them. Three pupils came to me with the idea and it coincided with a Childline scheme I had also heard about."
The buddies, aged between six and 11, have all received training from the children's charity.
They will report to the headteacher every two weeks on any progress they have made or any serious problems.
Mr Cowell said: "They will help where children are having trouble making friends or help them if they feel that they are being bullied.
"They will befriend them and point them in the right direction."
The buddies will work in groups of three during breaktime and lunchtime and they will wear yellow badges so the pupils know who they can approach.
The scheme is also aimed at helping youngsters who find starting school a daunting experience.
Mr Cowell said: "We want them to try and establish a dialogue with some of the younger ones who find it hard to cope when they start school."
